FAQ Answer - Who do I call? Taken from 49CFR and IATA DGR.

Whenever there is a spill, emission or accident involving infectious substances, telephone numbers play an important role. Call the 24-hour emergency response number that must appear on the package and the shipping document (USG 12 and 49CFR 172.604). This number must be monitored at all times that the hazardous material is in transport. The number must be that of a person who is either knowledgeable of the hazardous material being shipped and has comprehensive emergency response and incident mitigation information for that material or immediate access to a person who possesses such knowledge and information.

The number must be that of the person offering the hazardous material for transportation or of an agency or organization capable of, and accepting responsibility for, providing the detailed information concerning the hazardous material. The person offering hazardous goods for transportation who lists the telephone number of an agency or organization shall ensure that the agency or organization has received current information on the material.

IATA requires that you call the person responsible for the Class 6 Division 6.2 shipment (IATA 7.1.5.1 (f)). The name and number must appear on both the box and the shipping document.

In addition, all incidents must be reported to the proper authorities. In the United States, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention must be notified at 800-232-0124 (49CFR 171.15 b). Remember, this is NOT the 24 hour emergency number. It is used only for reporting the incident.
